About the Grape

Primitivo: Primitivo (pronounced pree-mitt-eve-oh) thrives in Puglia's Salento production area, however in 2001 it was recently discovered that it actually isn't native to Italy at all. It has been determined that Primitivo is the same grape as California’s famous Zinfandel. and both are genetically identical to the Crjenak Kastelanski (sirl-yen-knock kas-tel-an-ski) grape from Croatia. Regardless, Primitivo is capable of making full-bodied wines, full of dark fruit -- cherry, raspberry, blackberry -- aromas and flavours, rich tannins, and balancing acidity. Some, in fact, can benefit from some aging, although most are made for early drinking.

Vinicola Mediterranea

Vinicola Mediterranea is located in the historic town of San Pietro Vernotico, in the region of Puglia, in southern Italy. The area has an ideal climate for growing grapes, and here the famous Negroamaro and Primitivo vines, indigenous to Puglia, thrive.

Vinicola Mediterranea was created out of the regional cooperative in 1997 and has grown to become one of the top regional producers. The winery is modern, and works with heritage grapes to produce wines of great quality and character.
